K so past weekend was pretty cool. We helped Michelle Q during her set and killed it! There was a great size crowd and they were really feelin the music!

On Sat I was invited to be part of this Africa project. Ben the owner of Kaos Network more well known for being Project Blowed, has been working a documentary film about Project Blowed in Africa. Now Ben wants to take artists from the states and pair them with artists in Africa. I recorded a sick track that will be part of the documentary and compilation CD. Hopefully in future the artists from the States will get to go to Africa and meet the people we recorded with on each track.

Yeah I know, it's been almost a year since I have posted ne thing, but I am back yal! Lot of things coming up for me. Just a lil update! I went back to nor cal to finish school last semester and finished successfully! After long talks with my close friends and family I decided over winter break to move back to So Cal. I am happy with my decision. I just got hired working for Woodcraft Rangers @ Gompers Middle School. Peklat and I are working on our 1st EP! Things are finally coming along and that's exciting. NE who I have a show on Fri @ Urban Underground if you live in LA come through we are opening for Ugly Duckling.

I will miss him, but I know he is watching!

It's interesting how everyone is glued to their tv's watchin Michael Jackson Memorial. While I chose not to watch, because I would like to take this time to remember a man who meant a lot to me!

My grandfather passed away on FRI @ 7pm. I had a show to do about 3 hours later. I wasn't sure if I would be able to do it mentally and even physically.

I decided to do the show for him! This show was for him! I wish someone had recorded it, because it was my best performance to date!

I believe that his spirit was there to be there for me and for me to become a stronger and better artist.

His death made me a realize a lot of things about myself! How I can be mean at times. Or edgy...

Now I have a different outlook and want to become a better person.

I have become so much closer to my family in the past year.

I was always wonderin why god wanted me to stay in LA this past year. I thought it was my karma, cause here I was not being able to do anything for 2 months and walklin around with this huge ugly scar on my arm! And movin back with my momma... yeah u know how that can be.

I know now that I was here to bless LA, LBC, and the OC with my dope music! I stayed to become a better artist. If you heard my stuff before I lived here compared to now, I have grown so much! Shit on fri someone said I was like the Female Chuck D. I don't know how true that is, but to hear that was dope! I also know that I was here because I needed to be here with my family. My mom was out of work for a long time. My bros are growing up and needed someone like me to motivate them to be involved in the arts, Now 1 bro is a bboy and the other a drummer! I also needed to be here for this event that no one expected to happen right now. I have to be strong for everyone else that can't. I had my moments, but now I am good and here to be a crying shoulder.

I just want to thank all the people that have truely been there for me this past year. When I felt I had no one you were there. Even if we just kiked it one night and blazed some trees and had a beer. You were there for me in a tough time so thanks!

What a trip I'm tellin ya!

So I did ladies First then went to LAX. We flew @ 6am to SF arrived around 7:30. We hopped on the BART then transferred to CalTrain. missed the first connection to Santa Cruz caught the next one. made it to Santa Cruz and ate at Zacheries! One of my Fave spots in Santa Cruz.... We then hung with my homies Joe and Carly. We did what people normally do in Nor Cal...if you catch my drift...After spending a few hours in Santa Cruz we went to Watsonville and protested outside Wells Fargo for about 5 min. Saw the activist folks i love to kik it with there and got some food at the farmers market. We then went back on the bus and headed to Marina... CSUMB....crazy visiting my old college which I am returning to in Aug. It was fun, but when night time hit, it hit like a ton of bricks. There was so much negativity in the air, it effected me for sure! The next day was grad. It was cool ate in Carmel by the Sea. Full of the upper class folks hahaha... Slept on a hamock for what felt like days and then hit the bars @ night.... Same old Same old Downtown Monterey Bay.

The day I left we flew from monterey airport on an airplane line I never heard of. Usually I am pretty cool on planes and relaxed, but we took a nasty dive and all I thought in my head was that it was about to be over...I also realized that I am in love and to go through a moment like that with someone makes you tighter. It's funny how the Earth Shook a couple of hours later. I thought the roof was gunna cave in. Crazy....

I realized a lot this weekend about myself and the homies. I will look at the good times though. I saw a friends I havent seen in a very long time, and it was nice to see there faces and get caught up on life.

So on Thursday was Ladies First, an all female hip hop showcase. Despite some tech difficulties, it was a good show with some amazing performers.

The one thing that I was kinda upset about was the amount of people that showed up. I feel this happens a lot at womyn hip hop shows. We either get the same crowd, or no crowd. The people that showed were awesome and enjoyed the music, i just wish that more people could have come to experience the artistry of these lovely womyn. Here are some pix!

So a friend of mine went to my show this weekend Female perspective sound clash. It was a female song battle. Things got heated between some of the artist and my friend (who isn't from LA) wasn't used to being in that atmospher. She wrote me a message on myspace and I wanted to share it with you, along with my response.

Anonymous friends message to me:

Hey Tricia! Yo I didn't thank you for inviting me the other night! I had a great time and your performance was off the hook, triple cherry pie!...I need to get a CD from you. Seriously all the ladies that got up on stage are talented but you stood out cuz of your conscious lyrics in addition to the tight beat. There were few others who had songs that had some awareness but for the most part, some of the lyrics I felt were those I would hear coming from cocky ass boys. Not that women cant be hard or aggressive, but I just got disturbed seeing women put women down like that ya know? As if this male dominated world doesn't already do that enough then we gotta go beat down on each other too? Nah... there are so many other things to rhyme about. It wasn't the most revolutionary crowd either, but still it was hella fun! But yea baby girl mad respect for you. Mad! For one of my classes I didnt want to write a paper so I'm going to attempt to do a 5 min rhyme so it was a big dose of much needed inspiration too :)Cant wait for your next show.

Yeah gurl it's LA hip hop totally different scene. It's more grimey and you have to prove yourself out here.

I know it may seem like womyn were hatin on each other, but after doing my research on womyn in hip hop I have found that there are several different types of womyn that are hip hop artists. Esp in LA you have to prove yourself to be hard and be able to take out ne one. You aren't just judged on your written skills, but also your freestyle skills. Project Blowed is a spot where you really have to prove yourself or else they will tell you "Please Pass the Mic!" Ever since I moved back I have become a stronger artist because of the amount of competition. I never saw myself battling ne one, but what I have noticed is that me doing that makes me stronger and it alows me to see what are my weaknesses. Other then the one battle you saw where the girl left, most of the womyn have upright respect for each other and we support each other in our craft. It's so hard to be a womyn artist because you are put in this box of womyn shows and what not and you want to prove to everyone that you are more then that. It's a trip. Ne who yeah just wanted to let you know. Oh yeah the crowd, I was happy just see that many peeps at the blowed. It's been so dead lately. It was nice to see that the womyn brought the crowd.

yea I aint gonna lie some of them ladies were so talented you just had to look over the dissin cuz their skillz just shined through big time, and yes its understandable that that's just the way the rhyme game goes, at least one offshoot of it...again mad props for challenging yourself like that, you make it look so easy. It was a night of nerves and anxiety....

Being invited to participate in a song battle with some of the womyn who have influenced me to keep striving to make music. What a blessing!

At first i thought to myself " Ok Patricia get to at least the second round!"

We get there and a bunch of the womyn who were supposed to rock it didn't show up. So the competition was fierce! After I learned of the situation I told myself "Ok, at least get to the 1st round!" LOL!

I did exactly that and was proud of myself. Never saw myself to be someone to battle, but it made me stronger artist!

The battles all night were intense. It really was about getting the crowd and I believe that the right person won that night. Although, all the females represented to the fullist!

Talked to a friend of mine yesterday. He had asked me this past summer to lay some vocals down for this project he was working on. It was a contest to see who could make the best Gary Davis remixes to some of his most popular songs. So we got together labor day weekend and got down on this song. Mind you I hadn't heard it since I recorded my vocals. Since recording my voacls sevral other artists came in on the project and played live instruments to make a truely amazing song. Any way the good news is that we won the contest and our track in on Gary Davis new EP coming out very soon. This means worldwide distrubution, iTunes, and maybe vinal... crossing my fingers... lol

In order to represent my thoughts clearly about my Grandpa Jesse I decided to write a poem. This is my way of truly expressing myself.

This man

Meant a lot to me

He was my Buddy!

That's what he called me

He told me stories

About the base

Where I live now

He helped to document

That history

I went to a ceremony recently

And was told

By elders

My ancestors are strong

They guide me through my life

The night he passed

I performed

He stayed strong

Late comedian Bernie Mac had his wife and daughter by his side until the very last moments of his life, which was cut short by a bout with pneumonia.

The wise-cracking sitcom star and "Ocean's Eleven" sidekick will be sadly missed after his untimely death early Saturday morning. The 50 year-old comic had been in the hospital since July 24 when he checked in to receive treatment for pneumonia.

It was incorrectly reported last week that Mac had passed. His rep said that he was responding well to treatment at that time, and that the reports were inaccurate.

Mac developed pneumonia due to a new drug he was on to treat his chronic autoimmune disorder, sarcoidosis which he's been suffering from for two decades. The drug suppressed his immune system, which made him vulnerable and resulted in pneumonia. Kept sedated in intensive care for most of his time in the hospital, Mac was put on a ventilator and was unable to talk. According to his sister-in-law, "He struggled for his life. He couldn't breathe."

Despite the doctors' best efforts, the comedian passed away in a Chicago hospital after his heart failed twice. When his heart failed the first time he was revived by doctors and survived for about an hour until he went into cardiac arrest again. His wife of 31 years, Rhonda, and his daughter, Je’Niece, 30, managed to say their goodbyes.

Mary Ann Grossett, the sister of Mac's wife confessed to People.com about the comedian's last moments.

"He opened his eyes on his own and looked at Rhonda. She called his name, and he opened his eyes and nodded to her. She smiled at him and told him, 'Don't leave me … 'I'm waiting for you to come back.' He shrugged his shoulders, and she said that's when she knew he was tired. He signaled to her that his body was tired."

"What she (Rhonda) will treasure the most is the fact that she was his wife for 30 years – and not only was she his wife, but she was his best friend. She's going to miss him dearly," Grossett told People.

His peers and former co-stars have all spoken out about the entertainment industry's tragic loss including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Luke Wilson, George Lopez, and even Samuel L. Jackson who stars along with him in this Fall's comedy film "Soul Men."

"I lament the loss of a ferociously funny and hardcore family man. My thoughts are with Rhonda and their family. Bernie Mac, you are already missed," Pitt who starred with Mac in "Ocean's 11" revealed, while Clooney expressed his regret saying "The world just got a little less funny. He will be missed dearly."

Mac began his career as a stand up comedian over 30 years ago. He went on to his own sitcom on Fox, "The Bernie Mac Show," in 2001, and featured roles in films such as "Ocean’s 11," and "Charlie’s Angels." He planned to retire after he finished work on his film "The Whole Truth," "Nothing but the Truth," "So Help Me Mac." Last year, he confessed to David Letterman that he wanted to focus on producing and spending time with his family and that "I want to enjoy my life a little bit. I missed a lot of things, you know."

Isaac Hayes

Soul singer and musician Isaac Hayes, who won an Oscar for the theme of the 1970s film, "Shaft," has died, authorities in Memphis reported today.

Hayes, 65, was found unconscious by relatives in his home next to a still-running treadmill, Steve Schular, a spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, told CNN.

Paramedics unsuccessfully tried to revive Hayes, who was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead after 2 p.m., according to the sheriff's department. No foul play is suspected, the agency said in a written statement.

Hayes, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002, had been a longtime songwriter and arranger for Stax Records in Memphis. He played in the studio's backup band and crafted tunes for artists such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave in the 1960s.

He was scheduled to perform at the Mann arts center in Philly for the 50th anniversary of Stax Records.

Hayes released his first solo album in 1967.

In 1971, the theme from "Shaft" became a pop hit and won an Academy Award for best original theme song. The song and the movie score also won Grammy awards for best original score and movie theme.

In recent years, Hayes was known as “Chef” on the popular television show “South Park".

He also recently filmed a part in “Soul Men,” a film due out later this year alongside Bernie Mac, who also passed away this weekend.

Hi friends,

Thank you for taking a compassionate moment out of your busy schedule to read this letter. Omeid International is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to achieving a simple goal. Hope. This is what the word Omeid means and it is the basis of everything we do. It is the dream of everyone working here to see the unnecessary suffering of those who are most unable to help themselves, namely children, put to an end.

Wars and other conflicts, regardless of their political meaning or benefit always leave in their wake a devastating trail of destitution and hopelessness, especially for children. These kids have no politics. They have neither desire for property, prestige or domination over others; rather simply they struggle only to survive to see another day.

Our goal is to reach out the compassionate hand of brotherhood to the more then 2 million orphaned and 60,000 homeless children in Kabul, Afghanistan. Every day, these kids face the dangers of hunger and disease along with the constant threats endemic to failed states, including extremists, human and opium traffickers and other such predators who prey on these helpless children.

We are planning the construction of a school and orphanage; the Amin Institute, where some of these children will be able to safely access food, education, vaccinations, comfort, and most importantly hope. These efforts will serve not only to increase the standard of living for some of these forsaken lives but it will also help to bridge a gap between cultures. It will help these future citizens of the world to understand people from the western world and learn to appreciate our culture instead of seeing us only under the guise of war.

The Institute will be a beacon of goodwill in a place that has seen so much negativity and pain. It is not just a dream, but a reality waiting to happen. Real lives will be changed as they are shown what the determination and willingness of compassion can accomplish.

In order to accomplish this, we will need your help. We hope to begin construction on the Institute in Kabul before the onset of another harsh winter which all too often brings with it more meaningless death.

It will require approximately $100,000.

Black August: A Story of African Freedom Fighters

Black August is a month of great significance for Africans throughout the diaspora, but particularly here in the U.S. where it originated. "August," as Mumia Abu-Jamal noted, "is a month of meaning, of repression and radical resistance, of injustice and divine justice; of repression and righteous rebellion; of individual and collective efforts to free the slaves and break the chains that bind us.

"

This is the 22nd anniversary of Black August, first organized to honor our fallen freedom fighters, Jonathan and George Jackson, Khatari Gaulden, James McClain, William Christmas, and the sole survivor of the August 7, 1970 Courthouse Slave Rebellion, Ruchell Cinque Magee. It is still a time to embrace the principles of unity, self-sacrifice, political education, physical fitness and/or training in martial arts, resistance, and spiritual renewal. The concept, Black August, grew out of the need to expose to the light of day the glorious and heroic deeds of those Afrikan women and men who recognized and struggled against the injustices heaped upon people of color on a daily basis in America.

One cannot tell the story of Black August without first providing the reader with a brief glimpse of the "Black Movement" behind California prison walls in the Sixties, led by George Jackson, W. L. Nolen, Hugo Pinell, Warren Wells, Kumasi (Steve Simmons), and others.

As Jackson wrote:

"... when I was accused of robbing a gas station of $70, I accepted a deal ... but when time came for sentencing, they tossed me into the penitentiary with one to life. It was 1960. I was 18 years old... I met Marx, Lenin, Trotsky, Engels, and Mao when I entered prison and they redeemed me. For the first four years I studied nothing but economics and military ideas. I met black guerrillas, George 'Big Jake' Lewis, and James Carr, W.L. Nolen, Bill Christmas, Tony Gibson, and many, many others.

" We attempted to transform the Black criminal mentality into a black revolutionary mentality. As a result, each of us has been subject to years of the most vicious reactionary violence by the state. Our mortality rate is almost what you would expect to find in a history of Dachau. Three of us [Nolen, Sweet Jugs Miller, and Cleve Edwards] were murdered several months ago [Jan. 13, 1969] by a pig shooting from thirty feet above their heads with a military rifle.

When the brothers first demanded the killer guard be tried for murder, they were rebuffed. Upon their insistence, the administration held a kangaroo court and three days later returned a verdict of "justifiable homicide." Shortly afterward, a white guard was found beaten to death and thrown from a tier. Six days later, three prisoners were accused of murder, and became known as The Soledad Brothers. "I am being tried in court right now with two other brothers. John Clutchette and Fleeta Drumgo, for the alleged slaying of a prison guard. This charge carries an automatic death penalty for me. I canÕt get life. I already have it.

"The black bourgeoisie (pseudo-bourgeoisie), the right reverends, the militant opportunists, have left us in a quandary, rendered us impotent. How ridiculous we must seem to the rest of the black world when we beg the government to investigate their own protective agencies.

ArenÕt the wild hip-shooting pigs loose among us to protect the property rights of the people who formed the government?"
"The theory that all whites are the immediate enemy and all blacks our brothers (making them loyal) is silly and indicative of a lazy mind (to be generous, since it could be a fascist plot).

To win will involve taking a chance,crawling on the belly, naming, numbering, infiltrating, giving up meaningless small comforts, readjusting some values. My life means absolutely nothing without positive control over the factors that determine its quality.

Anniversary of the Death of George L.

Jackson

On August 21, 1971, after numerous failed attempts on his life, the State finally succeeded in assassinating Jackson, then Field Marshall of the Black Panther Party, in what was described by prison officials as an escape attempt in which Jackson allegedly smuggled a gun into San Quentin in a wig. That feat was proven impossible, and evidence subsequently uncovered indicated a set-up orchestrated by prison officials to eliminate Jackson once and for all. Of course, I doubt they counted on losing any of their own in the process.

On that fateful day, three notoriously racist prison guards and two inmate turnkeys were also killed. Subsequently, six prisoners were singled out and put on trial — wearing 30 lbs. of chains in Marin courthouse — for various charges of murder and assault: Fleeta Drumgo, David Johnson, Hugo L.A. Pinell (Yogi), Luis Talamantez, Johnny Spain, and Willie Sundiata Tate, who became known as the San Quentin Six. Only one was convicted of murder, Johnny Spain. The others were either acquitted or convicted of assault. Pinell is the only one remaining in prison and has suffered prolonged torture in lockups since 1969. He is currently serving his 11th year in Pelican BayÕs SHU, a torture chamber if ever there was one. A true warrior, Pinell never hesitated to put his life on the line to defend his fellow captives.

As decades passed, our Black scholars, like Mumia Abu-Jamal, learned of other liberation moves that happened in Black August. E.g., the first and only armed revolution whereby Africans freed themselves from chattel slavery commenced on August 21, 1791 in Haiti. Nat TurnerÕs slave rebellion began on August 21, 1831 (coincidence?), and Harriet TubmanÕs Underground Railroad started in August. As Mumia stated, "Their sacrifice, their despair, their determination and their blood has painted the month Black for all time.

On August 17, 1995, Mumia was scheduled to be executed in Pennsylvania. But hundreds of his supporters, myself included, were able to celebrate his stay of execution on that date in Philadelphia shortly after the Õ95 PCRA (post conviction relief appeal) hearings were held in State Court. This August 17, 2001 thousands [gathered] in Philadelphia to stand with our beloved freedom fighter, our "voice of the voiceless." ...

George Jackson counseled:
"Settle your quarrels, come together, understand the reality of our situation, understand that fascism is already here, that people are already dying who could be saved, that generations more will live poor butchered half-lives if you fail to act.

This is my fave spot in LA! Every Thursday people come from all over to graff, b-boy/b-gurl and make music. All ages come to release there tension of the week!

This spot has opened my horizons as an artist. It has helped me to become better at my word sway as EmseaDez likes to tell me. If we aren't workin' on a new song we are freestylin' a skill i have yet to master, but enough time at JU.I.C.E and the Blowed and I will get there.
